Research and Planning
- Mast-head: SOUTHFIELD'S SMILE
- Selling line: NO.1 magazine for girls up to year 7-11 and sixth form students, boys and girls
- Dateline: August 2015
- Cover lines: UNIFORM- Check out the new uniform and the way to wear it with pictures on the page
- 10- ways to make school more interest when learning and preparing for exams!
- Reviews- See what students think about the school, teachers and subjects available.
- SEE WHATS NEW IN SCHOOL
- Try out something new by joining Southfield's School
- Model credit: Annie's amazing smile! she says "Southfield's School makes me smile"
- Main cover line: EXTRA, Fun in school, all clubs available for any student
My magazine would attract readers because of the colours used in it, they are bright and noticeable if ever anyone would walk past it in the shop.
The front cover is of the model giving eye contact whereas if the model was turning her left to the side, it wouldn't be as eye catching, the smile from the model also sets off a good vibe, this is what i want when putting the magazine on the market as it is more that someone will buy it.
The master-head of the cover is big saying 'Southfield Smile', i want people to see what it is about and who it is aimed at so this is why the selling line is under the Master-head.
Every student wants to have fun in school so this is why i have added it to the cover also to catch there attention.
- Format: I used a range of fonts yo make the cover look more attractive
- Formula: Art edition including facts for making school more interesting
- Frame: The page is split into 3, with the model covering 2/3 and the writing covering 1/3
- Function: To appeal to girl students year 7-11 interested in moving school and sixth form students boys and girls who are also interested.
My cover compares to other covers because its a running theme of the subject about schools and the colour theme also stays the same.
There is eye contact from the model to the readers like other magazines would.
When doing my music magazine i hope to make the cover lines more visible so that the readers know what it is about and understand clearly, i also hope to make the colours brighter and to suit the style of the writing more to the theme of the magazine.
Secondary Research Examples
- Public sources. These are usually free, often offer a lot of good information, and include government departments, business departments of public libraries, and so on.
- Commercial sources. These are valuable, but usually involve cost factors such as subscription and association fees. Commercial sources include research and trade associations, such as Dun & Bradstreet and Robert Morris & Associates, banks and other financial institutions, and publicly traded corporations.
- Educational institutions. These are frequently overlooked as valuable information sources even though more research is conducted in colleges, universities, and technical institutes than virtually any sector of the business community.

Billboard
- The artist credits are usually big and bold because they are the main attraction.
- The artist picture usually takes up most of the page, probably around 1/3.
- They have put the 'Billlboard' title behind Beyonce's head as people know what the title is anyway, they wanted to show off the artist in on this magazine cover.
- The cover lines show what the magazine is about and for this particular magazine, the colours work well with the background, however sometimes they are hard to read because of the colour font and the background colour, there are 7 cover lines which is decent for a normal magazine.
- This is good for both genders as a pretty women on the cover will attract both, also as Beyonce is looking forward, its more eye catching.
Billboard is the world's most influential music media brand reaching key executives and tastemakers in and around the music business. The Billboard brand is built on its exclusive charts and unrivaled reporting on the latest news, this is why the cover lines are on the cover of the magazines to show what the magazine will include. Here is an example of the type of artists shown on the Billboard magazine.
Pie Charts and Evaluating

This shows me that I will defiantly focus on the celebrity as well as the information. Although the information is very important, people look at the magazine to see who is in it and who the magazine is about. They wouldn't buy it if the cover didn't impress them. If I was to focus on the information on the front cover, e.g. the cover lines then it wouldn't attract as much audience as the celebrity would on the front cover. I have a question on the celebrities people like the most that I will show in the next pie chart.

This is very important, it will help me see what people like to listen to as well as have a real interest. I can see from this that most people aged 16-17 like either 'HipHop' or 'grime'. These were two of my options to do for my magazine anyway.

Are Music Magazines Doomed?
Now that the internet and gadgets are out it's hard for the magazine companies to sell when people can just see the whole thing online.
It is now said that the number of weekly and monthly magazines has got smaller because of people looking at the magazines on their phones, computers, tablets etc. People now want to see the news. The magazine companies are not able to get the magazines out quick enough because of how fast the media is, magazines can't respond as quick as the media does. People now a days won't go down to the shop to pick up the latest news, they will now just look at their phones.

The digital magazines are far less static then traditional print magazine. Around 3% of the US population owned a table following the initial IPad released in 2010. In the first park of 2013 that number increased to 34%. The barriers for a digital magazine decreased because of this. At the same time digitizing platforms are broadening the scope of where digital magazines can be published, such as within websites and on smartphones.
In attempt to increase productivity and decrease production costs, brands are also beginning to use digital publications. The business digital magazines is increasing fast. Digital magazines provide a unique experience in an age where information flows quickly and readers can switch what they are reading easily.
However, some people argue that print magazines are not dead. A print piece is a physical thing. Magazines and newspapers can stay in houses or offices for months or years, while Internet ads can disappear into cyber space instantaneously.
There is something about print that gives a sense of legitimacy. The saturation of popups and banner ads on the web can be overwhelming and the fear of spam and viruses is enough make people weary of clicking. There is no imminent danger in a print ad.
Print ads are excellent for solidifying your brand identity. Your ads should have a consistent aesthetic in terms of fonts, colors and types of images to establish brand recognition.
Mood Board For My Grime Magazine
Unconventional Magazine Covers
This is the type of magazine the I would want to use in my magazine. They are both unconventional in different ways.
The one on the right is really simple with just the picture and the name of the magazine. I would add some cover lines to this but overall the picture is the type of picture that I want to go for. It is quite dark and intimidating whilst be really interesting at the same time. Rhianna's face has no expression on, this is what grime is like, very unemotional and mysterious. The colours are dull and the only thing that stands out on the page is Rhianna.
The cover on the right is different. It is the type of brand that I want to use (Adidas). This is because many grime rappers wear this brand, for example Stormzy. The colours are quite bright and different so I would want to change that to a more dull type colours. The cover lines are set out very differently rather than just being placed randomly around the page. The title blends in with the magazine so it is unconventional. However, I wouldn't want this type of position that they are in.
I will experiment with both the different type of unconventional magazines.
